We’ve been stuck indoors for so long, it’s easy to forget that it’s already past Memorial Day. For many of us, this summer isn’t going to look like it has in years’ past. You might be planning to stay closer to home this year due to travel restrictions, or perhaps you were already planning a staycation in order to save money. Regardless of your reasons, it’s still possible to have an exciting and memorable break. Here are a few ideas for you to have fun while social distancing this summer:
Be Creative
You may think you’re not crafty, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun trying a creative pastime like drawing and painting, pottery, knitting or sewing. Now that craft stores are open for supplies and with resources like YouTube and Pinterest available for tutorials, it’s never been easier to learn something new. And with the current demand for facemasks to protect those who are unable to maintain a 6-foot distance, you can also satisfy a real need to help others.
Explore Your Hometown
You might have lived there all your life, but how well do you really know your hometown? There are a lot of fun and interesting things to do in both Ludlow and Wilbraham; you just need to know where to look. Enjoy the great outdoors and get some much-needed exercise walking the Riverwalk or the Ludlow Reservoir, or take a hike at Facing Rock or Rice Preserve/Sunrise Peak Trailwalk.
Another way to pass the time this summer is to support your local small businesses. If you’re looking for gifts for special occasions like graduations, Father’s Day, birthdays, or more, check out your local gift store instead of purchasing from a big box store or online. It’s more important now than ever that we support the community businesses that have always supported us.
Take a Break
You might not be traveling, but you’re still on vacation even if you’re at home. Give yourself permission to relax a little bit. Don’t worry too much about the household chores or accomplishing everything on your To Do list. You wouldn’t be completing those tasks if you were lounging on a beach, so give yourself a break even if you’re just lounging by your backyard pool. Speaking of taking a break – there’s nothing wrong with unplugging from the digital world for a few days; turn off your phone or take a two-day social media detox to help unwind.
If you’re sick of cooking every day, take the opportunity to support your local business. Whether you’re planning to eat out or order takeout, Ludlow and Wilbraham both have a variety of restaurants to satisfy any craving, all of which will need our support as we phase out of the shutdown. You can enjoy a great meal with your family while helping another family provide for theirs.
However you decide to spend your staycation, don’t worry about your finances.
