One Book, One Community

Dear HWRSD Elementary Family,
The PTOs of the HWRSD elementary schools including TWB are proud and excited to introduce a cross district, family literacy initiative called One Book, One Community. The goal of this project is to provide a high quality book for families to read together and provide opportunities for our district to foster a sense of community by coming together throughout the summer and upcoming school year with engaging activities connected to this book.
Through the generosity of our community partners, LUSO Federal Credit Union and the Joseph Dias Jr. Estate Al Trust Foundation, we have purchased one copy of the 2010 Newbury Honor book, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin for every family with students in kindergarten through fifth grade on our district.
This fantasy-adventure novel is filled with beautiful rich language, and complex themes of friendship, want vs. need and perseverance. It truly should be a family read. There are sure to be exciting discussions as your family joins Minli on her journey. Please, feel free to summarize and paraphrase for some of our youngest readers as you see fit.
We are organizing a scavenger hunt throughout Hampden and Wilbraham, a kite festival and a visit from Grace Lin to keep families engaged an excited about this amazing story! For information on these upcoming events and more, Be sure to check out our website www.HWRSD1book1community.com.
