Over 140 million American consumers were affected when sensitive personal information was exposed in a data breach at Equifax, one of the nation’s three major credit reporting agencies.
According to Equifax, the breach lasted from mid-May 2017 through July 2017. The hackers are suspected to have accessed people’s names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and, in some instances, driver’s license numbers; they also are suspected of stealing credit card numbers for over 200,000 people and dispute documents with personal identifying information for over 180,000 people.
In order to address the confidentiality concerns of our member base following this breach, as well as several other major breaches over the past several years, the Credit Union has changed its account access procedures as follows:
Member account inquiries will now require a PASSWORD as another step for Member Identification purposes. We will be asking all our Members who have any form of access to us for a confidential Password to update our files. This Password will be required for ALL member identification purposes, whether over telephone or email.
We hope this new process will set our members at ease with confidence in their online security.
